Hygiene in connection with death

The Norwegian Board of Health Supervision has instructed funeral homes to provide information on hygiene matters in cases of death. The purpose is to reduce contamination from dead persons. When questions arise regarding disease and contamination, doctors and other health workers can give information.

Hand washing

Normal cleanliness is important. Initially this means thorough hand washing.

Cleaning

The sickroom should be washed. Clothes and bed linen should be washed at boiling temperatures.

Waste

The visiting nurse or the funeral home can help dispose of soiled items.

The Board of Health Supervision also points out that if the deceased is to remain at home for a period, room temperature must be kept at an acceptable level. If this is impossible the deceased should be moved to a suitable cold store in a mortuary or hospital. It is important to make sure that heating equipment has been switched off and that there is an adequate air supply. Furthermore, the deceased should be placed in a coffin within 24 hours of death.
